REVIEW: MASTERMIND - VOLUME 50: STREET LEGAL
Mastermind comes at us with his major label debut compilation Volume 50: Street Legal on Virgin Records. The album
features a variety of artists from Big L to N.W.A. to Nefarius.
Volume 50 has a nice balance of commerical and independent, and Canadian and American artists. This is something
he always managed to do well on the Street Jam. It includes the "Let's Make A Record Deal" series featuring D-Sisive on
Episode 1, Monolith on #2, and the third installment by Citizen Kane. Each starts out with a game show skit (with host
Dick Rider) and is followed by a couple verses from the featured emcees. The series makes fun of getting signed, making
videos, and battling.
The Canadians all make strong appearances. Saukrates, BrassMunk, Nefarius, and the Choclair & Mr. Roam track, "Bump!"
I wasn't really feeling the Kardinal/Rah Digga track though.
Dilated Peoples appear with "The Platform (Erick Sermon Remix)." I don't know what it is but I prefer the original
better.
My only real problem with this CD is that there are too many older tracks on it. "Chin Check," "Quality Control,"
"Cherchez Laghost," and "Hello." Also, I don't think the K-Os track "Follow Me" really fit on here. It had a more R&B
feel to it. Other than that there are enough good tracks on here to make buying it worth while.
So pick it up and support Canadian talent. Volume 50: Street Legal is a solid 7 out of 10.
Best Track: "It Ain't Nuttin" by Saukrates & BrassMunk
