REVIEW: UNDERGROUND SOUNDZ VOLUME 1
Kitchener/Waterloo area label Arbitron Records has released a compilation featuring a variety of unsigned artists
from all over North America.
The CD starts off with a track from Brooklyn's Little Egypt called "The Force Of One." Egypt spits some nice lyrics but I
wasn't really feeling the beat on this though. A little to monotonous. Next up is Ope with "Ready Fo Yo Head." I heard this
track a few months ago and wasn't feeling it, but it's grown on me since then. Like the first track Ope has some nice lyrics
but the beat isn't as good as it good be.
The Underworld Chiefs hit us with "Put Ya Dukes Up" which is a pretty good track. The beat is nice and the mcs flow fit well.
The next track is from Toronto's Anonymous Twist. While I'm not feeling "Mercury Dripping" as much as the material from his Eugenics
LP, it's still pretty good. It has the same battle type lyrics that everyone loves and a good beat produced by DJ Qwerk. "Last
Dance With You" is the first of two tracks from K-W emcee Smoke. It's one of the best tracks on the compilation as he speaks to
his girl.
A couple tracks later is Wu-Tang Records' Darkim Be Allah. "Niggaz Know" has probably the album's best beat. The darker beat that
sounds a lot like the something from 36 Chambers. Insane Clicc, Lil DVS, and Black Souls come with the next 3 tracks. They're all
more uptempo with Lil DVS spitting the sex-style lyrics.
The last track is the second from Smoke. He vents frustration at people who act like they're "King Shit." The beat is good. The
only suggestion I have for Smoke is to work on his flow. He has good lyrics, but just needs to change up his flow a little bit.
Overall, this is a good album featuring some MCs that people may not have had a chance to hear.If you like radio-friendly hip hop,
this is not for you but if you like more of an underground sound, pick it up.
