REVIEW: THE LIGHT IS BUT THE SHADE OF DARKNESS

4th Pyramid - The Light Is But The Shade Of Darkness Before receiving this CD I had never heard of 4th Pyramid other than a few write ups on the internet. With that said, after hearing this album, I'm left wondering why that was. The Light Is But The Shade Of Darkness is an instrumental album that has a little something for everyone. There's some jazz, some funk, and some rock all blended together to make some great hip hop.

The album opens with "Contemplating Where To Begin", a track that has a nice jazzy feel to it. The next track, "Eve Of The Renaissance" features Woodstock on the guitar. "Light Through The Fog" is another great track, though it has kind of a sad feel to it.

As we move through the album, we come to "Memories Of A Dream". The track opens with a nice piano loop, then we're briefly hit with a little guitar before switching back to the piano. "Taking It Back (Yesterdays Pt. 2)" is another piano and trumpet laced track that comes off real nice.

My favourite track on this album is "Wallabee Strut". Great guitar loops mixed with the occasional saxophone leaves you wanting more. This is a track that you can just listen to over and over again.
The last track on the album is "Long Journey Home", a track with statik in the background but it just adds to the whole thing.

Overall, this is a great instrumental album from 4th Pyramid. There's jazz, and funk, as I've already mentioned but there's also the Arabian-sounding "Thieves In The Night" and the Latin-influenced "Another Painted Picture". Even the interludes a nice, the best one being "Times of Reflection" with a real nice guitar sample. The music that 4th Pyramid brings is a breath of fresh air in an otherwise polluted industry.
