CONSCRIPT DELIVERS ‘THE HIGH GRADE’
Toronto hip hop artist / producer releases anticipated mix tape as a free download
Some people refer to music as “The Perfect Drug”, it can be addicting, it can alter ones perception of reality and can totally consume you. When it comes to Toronto born rapper / producer Conscript, he makes sure his music is raw, uncut and extremely intoxicating, hence the title of his debut independent street album ‘The High Grade’. “I’ve been sitting on this album and the title for years, to me it represents the quality of music I do, which is very high in potency. You might feel it right away or some songs may grow on you like a high that creeps up, but the goal is to get you ‘high’ off my music.” The album has been years in the making and features a compilation of songs and beats all produced by Conscript. “The album is divided into two parts, ten songs and ten beats. I picked songs that I thought had a universal appeal and balanced both dark tones and bright elements perfectly.” The High Grade features the singles ‘Still Searching’ which has been receiving air play over the past couple months on a number of campus and Internet radio outlets both in Canada and internationally as well as the club banger “Shut it Down”. Among the ten songs on the album are a few appearances from a number of Canadian talents that add their own elements to The High Grade’s sound. “I worked with a few artists on this project that I’ve been meeting online or at shows, or have known for years, they all bring their own unique styles to the table. I got my main dude Quiz, who’ve ive been rapping with since 5th grade and J-Matic who’s kind of my secret weapon. I also got the chance to collaborate with artists like Mic Boogie, Symmetry and Big Gutz. Kept it Toronto, big ups to all the artists involved.”
The High Grade’s second half features a collection of beats produced by Conscript that he has chosen to release as free beats for any up and coming artists to jump on. “I knew for my first mix tape, I had to do something totally new. Through learning more about the business of music over the years, I realize those who see the most success aren’t just money driven, it’s the one’s who strive to change the game. Anyway I can change the game and elevate it I feel is great.” The beats on the album are very diverse and incorporate different elements and themes. Conscript’s use of sampling on tracks like ‘Cold Hearted’ and ‘Blinded by the Lights’ is brilliant as he is able to use vocal tracks as instruments themselves. “To me, I’d say the ten beats are more for the rugged emcee. Overall I’d say the sound of the album is something you can drink and blaze to, chilling with your peoples, it’s also a great free styling album, definitely a great cipher album”
The High Grade will be made available as a free download online as of April 20th, 2009, which is a day with a lot of significance. “I had to drop this on four twenty, I couldn’t think of a better release date than the only day you can blaze freely in Tdot and even blow the smoke at police. With plans for music video’s and future volumes of the High Grade, Conscript looks towards the path ahead, “Look out for ‘The High Grade Vol. 2’ its going to feature a collection of rock beats, I’m hoping to drop that later this year.
