INTERVIEW WITH MISTA BOURNE

Tell the readers a bit about yourself?

Well let's see. I am an up and coming artist that goes by the name of Mista Bourne. 2007 will be my 3rd year really going hard at this music thing, and it also marks the year of my second release, 'A Star Is Bourne' THE STREET ALBUM. I have also worked with some of the cities best like Richie Sosa, Aristo, Luu Breeze, Rich London, J Robb, and that's just to name a few. At the end of the day I'm an artist working towards success just like everyone else.

What made you first pick up the mic?

To be honest it started off just for fun. We used to just freestyle over instrumentals, then after a while songs started forming with hooks and crazy metaphors. Before I knew it a couple years had past and I had a bunch of material that could potentially have been ready for the streets. But I waited and a year after that I dropped "Tired of Waitin". The more time I spent in the studio, writing and working on my craft, I got more confident and the music was coming out a lot more natural, and here we are 'A Star Is Bourne' (laughs).

Who or what would you say has had the most influence on your music to date?

Honestly, there are a few people/artists that have influenced my music, but the main influence has been my lifestyle, where and how I grew up. I grew up in Rexdale and if you are from my hood you would definately be able to tell by listening to my music, the swagg, the slang, its imbedded into every 16 and hook I lay. Shout out my camp Smoke Clique and shout out G-Squad while we on the topic.

Your mixtape, "Tired of Waiting," came out last year. What was the feedback like?

Honestly, it was a decent response, one I can't complain about. I accomplished what I wanted from that mixtape, a little recognition and people knowing the name. The mixtape was reviewed in Big Apple's Swagg Mag and got a 4/5 apples rating, which was a good look as well. Shout out the folks over at Swagg and Mixtape Maniac for making that happen. But other than that I also feel like Vol. 1 opened a few ears which opened the lane for expectancy of a follow up, not to mention a small fan base. Overall Tired of Waitin did well for me as an artist.

Tell us about your upcoming album. Who's on it? Who produced it?

A Star Is Bourne THE STREET ALBUM... hhhmmm well lets see, in terms of features there are a few, I don't want to let everything out of the bag but you can expect to see Luu Breeze on it, Jus Nyce, Rich London, Aristo, Set 2, and a few more familiar artists that you MIGHT of heard of before (laughs). In terms of producers for sure you got the nigga Boots of Stand Out Music (formally Trailblazahz Productions), Legion of Beats, Aon Productions, JusDoe of Century Records and a few others as well. This time around I really wanted to collab with artists not just from my camp, I feel a lot of artists in the city and with Vol. 1 building a bit of a name and a rapport, it opened doors of opportunity to work with other talent and I am taking advantage of that, networking as much as possible, feel me?

You're also part of Mad Fam and Take Over Records, what's in the plans for both? And what can we expect from yourself?

Mad Fam is the camp and Take Over is the label, both are accomplishments I had a hand in creating. There are a few other artists coming off of Mad Fam/Take Over, but I have my lil nigga YB (Young Bizkit) that's about ready to drop his mixtape called Growing Pains. Look out for him, he is an animal and he's like 17 so he is still learning and growing as an artist. You might have noticed that I am calling my next release a street album for the simple fact that I wanted to put my time into something a little more that just a mixtape. From start to finish it is all original production. I guess it's me just trying to stay a step ahead of the competition and hopefully stand out as one of the main artists in the city. That's pretty much what you can be expecting from Take Over in the immediate future.

If you could pick one artist and one producer to work with, who would they be?

Wow, what a question. Well in terms of producers who I would like to work with and haven't gotten the chance to yet, I would have to go with Rich Kidd. I'm really feeling the product he is putting out, the shit is unreal. The stuff he had on The Offence mixtape was rediculous. I heard some of the work he be doing with them Hustle n Flip niggas, (shout out Mason Payne and Casino Casta) that shit is nuts, and just overall he makes my type of beats. So if you reading this Rich, let's get it poppin.

As far as an artist I would have to say Elohim Marino. I have been a fan of his since he went by Boywonda. To see the type of artist he has evolved into is what is needed from us young artists and its a good look (shout out the whole Blaq Ink Family).

What are your thoughts on hip hop in Toronto?

Personally I think it's starting to actually shape into something. I say this because we are embracing ourselves, talent is recognizing other talent within the city, and it doesn't feel like its just a specific "CIRCLE" making moves and putting out good music. So called "underground" Toronto artists are starting to break out of that shell and get a bit more exposure. A good example of that would be Page, he is doing his thing right now. And Rich London, he was nominated for a Juno which is a very good look.

While we on the topic I have to mention people like J Bizz of Crackhouse Radio and Rawone of Street Music Online Radio and Yourself for creating these outlets dedicated to us Toronto Artists. You guys believe in us and show that support and the work you guys do don't go unappreciated. Speaking for myself of course. So to sum it up, the city's hip hop scene is consistantly getting better.

Any shout outs or anything thing else you'd like to add?

Yea, I would like to shout out Mad Fam, Smoke Clique, Take Over Records, and Heavy Hitterz Ent., all of the producers and artists that are playing apart in my project 'A Star Is Bourne.' Shout out Sound Resolve Recording Studios, Kamakacci, y'all already know what it is, big shout out to Natalie over at The Unseen Movement (look out for her she doin' really big things). Shout out my little niggas Young Bourne, Young Wun and shout of the whole city for making Toronto hip hop what it is. Y'all keep supporting your local talent, it's appreciated and we gonna keep holding y'all down and creating that good music. And I thank you Matt for making this possible, keep doing ya thing. Oh, and request the new single "Lil' Bit" on your local radio station, and make sure to check out www.myspace.com/madfam. Mad Fam All Day. I'm out.
