INTERVIEW WITH LOLA

Let's start out with the basic. Who is MC LOLA?
I'm a female MC who's been in da game for a minute. I been rappin since I was 14 and started takin it serious when I was 16, I'm 20 now. I'm born here in Toronto, Canada but I'm an international artist. I do alot of stuff out of the U.S and I'm getting ready to do a few things out in Europe. When I was younger I used to write poetry and decided to take it to the next level and change my poetry into hip hop music. I Love music and I know this is what I'm here to do. I always wanted to be a singer from when I was 3 years old. My momma used to say I would dance and sing around the house alllllll day. I sing too but spittin lyrics is what I do best. What can I say? I got the best of both worlds.

In your bio you mention some important people in your family's history. Tell us a bit about it.
I'm the 4th generation grandaughter of Josiah Henson who was the first black man on a Canadian Stamp. He was a slave and escaped slavery into Canada. He's met the Queen and Presidents. He was also honoured by the government of Canada in 1999, there was erected a plaque designating Henson as a Canadian of National Historical Significance. Check out my roots peoples: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Josiah_Henson.

I'm the third generation neice of Matthew Henson who discovered the North Pole along side Robert E. Peary. Matthew Henson is Josiah Henson’s great-grand nephew.

Aunt Harriet Tubman who helped free thousands of slaves from slavery in the U.S into Canada. St. Catharines was the final destination for freedom-seekers during the time of slavery in the US. Aunt Harriet Tubman's church and Museum is in St. Cathrines, Ontario, which is one of the most insipring black historic sites. The church has all my family's history and names. All my ancestors are a big part of black history! Harriet Tubman was called the ‘Black Moses’ and graced St. Catharines with her presence for years. Every year in the second weekend of August in St. Catharines we celebrate our family picnic ("FREEDOM SEEKERS") which has been going on for over 100 years.

Where do you get your motivation to do what you do?
I get my motivation from my family history from other artists like 2pac, Nas, Biggie, Jay Z, Roxanne shante, Foxy Brown, Queen Latifa, Lil Kim, etc. I like alot of hip hop artists, just wouldn't be able to name em all. I'm a hip hop head and totally support hip hop to the fullest.

Who would you say has had the biggest influence in your career so far, either personally or professionally?
My mother has been the biggest influence in my life and my career she's very supportive in what I do.

What are your thoughts on the hip hop scene in Toronto and Canada as a whole?
I love Toronto this is where I'm from. But honestly I think Canada needs to show more support to their artists and we need to all come together and help put Canada on the map. It's not easy for an urban female hip hop MC to make it in Canada. We just need to be more supportive.

You've done a number of shows now, what has been the most memorable?
I don't have a most memorable performance, I loved em all.

You've also done some acting, how did you get involved in that?
I've always been in acting from school plays to the big screen. I've done commercials, jingles, etc.

If you had to choose between music or acting, what would it be?
If I had to choose between music and acting I would choose music because that's my ulitmate passion. But I love acting too and would def cross over and enjoy the best of both worlds.

What projects are you working on currently?
I'm working on my official commercial released album right now and there will be major features on it. So look out for my single will be released soon.
