TOMMY G
Born Orendal Charles in Grenada the West Indies, Tommy G has designed his
blueprint to become the ambassador of his home town, Southside Scarborough.
Growing up in the Caribbean was not easy for him. After his mom left Grenada
for Canada when Tommy was only 3 years old, he remembers being confused as
to who was his real mother. His biological mother or his grandmother. His
distress grew stronger as time passed before his mother would call or write.
After the diminishing health of his grandmother, his biological mom was
forced to take charge of Tommy and that paved the way for his arrival in
Canada in 1995. Feeling completely out of place, Tommy relied on the
comforting and personal guidance of his mother's then boyfriend's brother.
He introduced him to Basketball and the Hip Hop movement . In 1996 Tommy
started listening to 2pac which he believes gave him the hunger to become a
rapper.
While life was getting harder in his household, Tommy's mother struggled
with 3 jobs while his step father crafted his art of drug dealing. Breaking
the code of "don't get high on your own supply",his stepfather became
seriously addictive resulting in an escalating abusive relationship. This
hardship soon introduced him to stealing and robbing to try to contribute to
the household.
After meeting two friends in school who had the same musical inspiration,
they formed a group called The Chase. The Chase consisted of a young
producer name Zeus and budding rapper Rony O. In 2001 they recorded their
first full track called "Criminal Music". However, after Rony O was moved to
another city the group eventually desolved. While Tommy and Young Zeus was
left to continue their quest, they planned a robbery to gain enough money to
travel to an independent Record Company. That landed them both with multiple
counts which almost awarded Tommy deportation back to Grenada. With bail
restrictions placed on them both, Tommy started paying attention to major
rap and rnb players like The LOX, DIDDY, R.Kelly, Dr. Dre, Eminem, Mase, all
of who he credits as major music inspiration.
During that time period Tommy would write over 200 songs. In the months to
come, he would record one of the most influencial mixtapes in the citys rap
music era "Put tha $ in da bag b*tch", going on to sell over 22,000 units
around Canada. After months of speculation, Tommy met with C! of
hardknockmusic and joined the hardknockmusic family. Look out for the cities
newest superstar.
