TABOO

Taboo The ever-growing hip hop scene in Toronto has produced a large number of talented artists and producers that have put "T-Dot" on the map. This seems to bring to mind a question that comes up almost instantaneously: Where tha ladies at? In a predominantly male dominated business, that we've had to deal with, it seems that it would be harder to break through in Canada, especially for a female emcee who's just starting out.

Enter an 18 year old name Taboo. This vicious and hungry lyricist has given the city something to talk about. Straight out of the Regent Park housing projects in T.O., Taboo has had quite a busy year. From sharing the stage with the likes of Mos Def and Jill Scott to appearing on labelmate Trench 12", "Nobody Knows." Taboo has also caused an online frenzy at Illnoiz.com, where she conducted many interviews and dropped plenty of freestyles, to the delight of listeners worldwide.

Taboo has been anxious to unleash her verbal assault on the world since she first picked up the pen. "I can't compare myself to anyone's stlye, but if I had to it would probably be Queen Latifah and Lil Kim." Her influences range from Tupac and Wu-Tang to NWA and Mia X. Taboo's ruff, rugged and raw style stems from her real-life experiences that have taken her from the gutter to the ghetto. "I'm reppin for all the home girls that do dirt with a purpose; the hookers, strippers, thug girls and baby mommas that strive to get by in this day and age." And that she does. Her first single "Never Fails" caught the attention of Parkland Records CEO Dvine Demus who signed her on the spot after hearing her demo. The track was produced by Scam and will be released this spring.

"Toronto's got a lot of female emcees, but they ain't talkin about the realness, cause they're just happy to be working, but what about the chicks that don't go to the clubs, that don't live that life, etc., they need someone to relate to, and that someone is me."

Taboo's debut album, "No Man's Land" starts pre-production in the summer on 2001 and will feature a wide array of producers and artists from T.O. It will finally open the world's eyes to the truth - from a female's perspective.
