COLLIZHUN
In an ever increasingly crowded hip-hop landscape, it grows more difficult to locate anything that remotely resembles
substance and merit. However, artists that reflect the true core of hip-hop still exist. Although there are a multitude
of qualities that define the essence of hip-hop, only a small number of artists can actually claim to possess these
characteristics. MC Collizhun undeniably belongs among these select few.
MC Collizhun? MC Collizhun… A founding/charter member of Nefarius, Toronto’s MC Collizhun has experienced meteoric
success as his group assumed legendary proportions in underground circles. Along with his rhyming partner MC Kwesro,
MC Collizhun’s mission always has been to vault to international hip-hop music prominence instead of remaining just a
Canadian rap success story.
The critical and commercial acclaim lavished upon MC Collizhun during the course of his tenure in Nefarius serves only
to emphasize that he is indeed worthy of ascending to the top. The highlight of the vaunted Toronto underground vinyl
compilation EP, “Planet Mars,” (Kneedeep/Get Reel) was the MC Collizhun produced “No Chorus” by Nefarius. This track
cemented his production and lyrical reputation locally as well as in the rest of Canada by becoming a staple on college
radio stations from coast to coast.
In the wake of “No Chorus,” MC Collizhun continued his unrelenting sonic assault. He soon unveiled the now infamous “You
Can’t Handle The Truth,” inciting a storm of controversy in the process. Instead of conforming to the conventional
Toronto practice of blindly supporting local acts, this song was a challenge and a call-to-arms. The creative lyrical
insights of MC Collizhun and MC Kwesro directly targeted the problems that have historically beset Toronto rappers,
precluding the so-called megacity from realizing its anointed role in the hip-hop universe.
Once the ensuing melee over “You Can’t Handle The Truth” had subsided, high expectations greeted “Pondering,” and MC
Collizhun was more than ably equipped to meet this challenge head on. Employing an infectious beat, “Pondering” seamlessly
became yet another classic hip-hop anthem in MC Collizhun’s ever-expanding repertoire. More recently, MC Collizhun produced
a collaboration (“Hold Your Karna”) with Phife Dawg (formerly of A Tribe Called Quest), featured on renown Canadian radio
personality DJ Mastermind’s “Volume 50: Street Legal” (Virgin Music Canada) mix CD.
Despite the tragic passing of MC Kwesro in the Spring of 1999, MC Collizhun is resolutely committed to forging ahead,
focused on attaining his vision of reaching all hip-hop aficionados, listeners, and supporters internationally through his
musical talents and always intact sense of humor.
Although MC Collizhun’s studio output has been fundamental to the success of Nefarius, it is the sublime power of his live
performances that undeniably made them a complete hip-hop unit. MC Collizhun has enjoyed marquee status in many showcases
in Toronto and Canada. Unlike many other acts in the hip-hop world, MC Collizhun is always able to electrify audiences,
who consistently respond in kind often by wildly applauding the raw skills in full display before them.
Visual media outlets also have been duly served notice of MC Collizhun’s presence, highlighted by appearances on
MuchMusic’s RapCity and DaMix programs.
Consign all useless contenders to the cutout bins – ready for MC Collizhun and his Tough Dumplin’ production franchise?
